EPILEPSY (CONVULSIONS)

EPILEPSY (CONVULSIONS)

In the brain, excessive electrical discharges occur in the nerve cells abnormally as a result of increased excitator activity or decreased activity of the inhibitory system. Spare electricity causes loss of consciousness and contractions in all muscles. During this time, the eyes usually move up and the cyanosis can be seen. Breathing stops, increase in saliva or foaming may occur. Patient strongly tightens his teeth, and can bite his tongue. This stiuation is called epileptic seizure.
Trauma, infections, tumors, intracerebral hemorrhages, intoxications, vascular diseases etc. may cause epilepsy. The most important factor in the pathogenesis of the disease is the impaired balance between glutamate and GABA-labeled neurotransmitters. Glutamate increases, GABA decreases. There must be a balance between these two systems. GABA boosting drugs is usually given for treatment. Despite medications, the patient may have a seizure. The patient is required to use these medicines for a lifetime.
Ideal treatment; It is the treatment that permanently removes the disorder causing excessive glutamate production in the brain and results in the patient getting rid of the lifetime drug use.
